ZONeSEC

The ZONeSEC project (full name: Towards a EU framework for the security of Widezones) aims to deliver an innovative and cost-effective approach to the protection of critical widezone areas across the European Union. Widezone areas include water, oil, and transnational gas pipelines; highways; and railways. The purpose of the project is to develop widezone surveillance technologies to monitor threats, particularly those situated at Member States’ shared borders. The system will be tested and improved through the development of several demonstrations in four European countries.

Crisisplan BV’s role in this project is to:

  1. Conduct extensive research and produce an inventory of best practices in the field of wide zone technologies
  2. Collect and analyse end-user requirements, and forward these requirements to the project’s technical partners who are developing the ZONeSEC system.
  3. Organize and evaluate the pilot demonstrations.
  4. Based on the outcome of these pilot demonstrations, Crisisplan BV will provide a final project evaluation that will offer technical partners and end users the means to assess the usability of the newly developed technologies, with the goal of adopting these technologies across the European Union’s widezone areas.

Crisisplan coordinated the first pilot demonstration of ZONeSEC, an FP7 project dedicated to developing an integrative and affordable solution for the surveillance of large critical infrastructures. The ZONeSEC team recently deployed the developed system at Acciona (highway operator in Spain) and demonstrated different technologies for detecting and localizing illicit patterns of activity.
